Dominique Baez, who serves as president of the Hamden Legislative Council, recently announced she is running for mayor, joining a competitive field of Democratic challengers looking to unseat the incumbent Mayor Lauren Garrett, who will seek a third term in the Nov. 4 election.

On March 19, Baez kicked off her campaign by marching the short distance from Memorial Town Hall to the Town Clerk’s office in the Hamden Government Center, where she filed the necessary paperwork for her candidacy. 

Elected to the Legislative Council in 2019, Baez, a lifelong Hamden resident, said in a recent phone interview she feels she has fulfilled her potential in her current role and wants to to take on more responsibility as the town’s chief executive. She previously served as treasurer of Hamden’s Democratic Town Committee.

Baez has spent her life envisioning ways to strengthen and support Hamden and its people. Now, with years of civil service under her belt as Representative At-Large and Legislative Council President and hands-on experience working in the private sector to provide free training and apprenticeships within the construction industry, she is ready to implement those ideas: real progress bolstered by sustainable economic development, an ear to the ground for the wants and needs of the community, and smart approaches to fiscal responsibility. Baez is ready to be the champion her town needs to see it through its current and future hardships, leading with heart, passion, and a clear vision of a stronger, more prosperous town.
